History

The Tip O’ Texas Genealogical Society (TOTGS) was founded in February 1962 when a group of eight women met in Harlingen, Texas, to explore their roots back to pre-revolutionary times.  Their first acquisition was a D.A.R. Index that became the nucleus of the genealogical collection in the Harlingen Public Library (Library).  Resources available to present-day genealogists have grown to include several thousand volumes of varying sizes and topics, including guides, local histories, “how-to” books, documents from all states, several hundred state and national quarterlies as well as resources from many nations representing all ethnic groups.  In March 1975, TOTGS became a nonprofit corporation.  The organization meets regularly at the Harlingen Public Library for programs designed to enhance members’ abilities to research their family history.
